She arrived at The Times from The Boston Globe in 2000 to join the newly expanded education desk. This is a perfect assignment for Kate, who has a long track record of understanding political currents in the country. She will also be casting her eyes this year on the politics of parents who are emerging from the pandemic exhausted and ready to express their preferences at the polls. In the months heading into the Supreme Court’s pivotal decision on abortion, Kate will look at how states are preparing for the big moment. Kate Zernikewill scan across these debates, illuminating larger trends across the country. The number of national political fights that seem to originate in statehouses and local districts – over abortion, education, vaccines and more – has only multiplied in recent years. How this all shakes out is going to be a major target for the entire National desk, so I’m very excited to share that two wonderful colleagues in the newsroom are joining us to help unearth some important answers. The pandemic has not only been a global public health story – it has the makings of a momentous political event that will reshape how Americans see their country and their government for years to come.
